Services

Start with X to create your account and sign in. Then explore F’s games with the same account.

X — accounts & authentication

Your starting point on RustNet. Register and sign in, set up automatic authentication, then manage your nickname and channels.

What X does

X is RustNet’s own account and channel service. It looks after registered accounts, reserves their matching nicknames, and manages access and settings for registered channels.

Send commands to X in a private message. Its built-in help shows the commands available to your account and connection.

/msg X HELP

For help with one command, add its name: /msg X HELP REGISTER. Use /msg X SHOWCOMMANDS to browse your available commands.

About the examples

Replace values in angle brackets with your own details, without the brackets. Replace #channel with your channel. Send passwords only to X, over a verified TLS connection.

Register and sign in

Create an account

/msg X REGISTER <account> <password> <email>

Choose 2–30 letters, digits or hyphens, starting with a letter. Your account name reserves the matching nickname, ignoring capitalization. A name currently used by another connection cannot be registered.

Passwords must be 8–256 bytes; symbols are allowed. An email address is required. Registration signs you in immediately and sends a verification email. Verify your address to enable password recovery. Passwords are never emailed.

Sign in next time

/msg X AUTH <account> <password>

LOGIN is an alias for AUTH. Your account stays the same when you change your nickname. Up to two connections may use an account at once.

/msg X WHOAMI

WHOAMI shows which account you are using. /msg X LOGOUT signs out this connection only.

Verify or change your email

After registration, check your inbox and spam folder. While signed in to X, send the confirmation command from the email:

/msg X EMAIL VERIFY <code>

The code works once and expires after one hour. You can use your account before verification, but email recovery stays unavailable until you verify.

Add or change an address

/msg X EMAIL <current-password> <email>

Use this if you registered before email was required, need another verification email, or want to change your address. Follow the new confirmation email. Your existing address stays in place until the change is verified; a verified old address receives a notification.

Check your email status with /msg X INFO <account>. Your email details are private to you and authorized staff.

Forgotten password

You do not need to be signed in. Connect to RustNet and use your account name and the exact email address you verified:

/msg X FORGOTPASS <account> <registered-email>

Open the private HTTPS link in the email and enter your new password twice. The link works once and expires after one hour. Your password stays unchanged until you submit the new password. Requesting a link or opening the page does not sign you out.

X allows three recovery emails per account in a rolling 24 hours, including staff requests. Repeating a request preserves an active link without sending another email. IP and destination limits also apply. The reply does not confirm whether the details match.

Completing a reset signs out existing sessions and sends a confirmation email. Registered TLS client certificates remain valid. Then sign in normally with your new password.

No verified address or no access to that mailbox? Contact RustNet. Administrator and developer accounts require developer assistance. Never share a reset link, verification code or password.

Authenticate when connecting

SASL lets your client sign in to X during connection, before joining channels. In your client’s authentication settings, choose SASL PLAIN and enter your X account name and password. Keep TLS enabled on port 6697.

Use the account name, even if your current nickname is different. Client interfaces vary; look for a network or server authentication setting rather than a generic server password field.

X also supports SASL EXTERNAL with a registered TLS client certificate. To manage your own certificate, use /msg X HELP CERT. Certificate authentication is optional.

Using a bouncer? Configure X authentication on its connection to RustNet. Your client’s login to the bouncer is separate; follow the bouncer’s connection instructions.

Protect and recover a nickname

Every account owns the nickname that exactly matches its account name, regardless of letter case. You do not register it separately.

When connecting without authentication, you have 30 seconds to sign in before X changes a protected nickname to a guest name. SASL avoids that wait. Signing in to a different account does not give you access to the name.

Check a name

/msg X NICKINFO <nickname>

This shows the owner and availability of a nickname. An unused protected nickname still belongs to its account.

Recover your own nickname

/msg X RECLAIM

Authenticate first. X recovers the nickname matching your account and gives the current occupant a guest name without disconnecting them.

If another connection signed in to your own account is using it, X asks you to confirm. Follow the response with /msg X RECLAIM CONFIRM <code> within two minutes.

Register and manage a channel

Join your channel, authenticate to X, and make sure you currently have channel operator status before registering it:

/msg X REGISTER #channel

Your account becomes the channel owner, with full access and automatic operator status. Check your access with:

/msg X WHOAMI #channel

Give someone access

Access belongs to an account, so it follows the person when their nickname changes. As an owner, you can inspect the access list and grant protected operator access:

/msg X FLAGS #channel
/msg X FLAGS #channel <account> +op

+o grants operator access; +p protects eligible status. CHANLEV and ACCESS are aliases for FLAGS.

+n Owner
Full channel control.
+m Master
Manage settings and users below master access.
+o Operator
Use the channel operator commands available to this account.
+v Voice
Eligible for voice; includes known-user access.
+k Known
Allowed by the channel’s KNOWNONLY setting and able to request an invite.

Use /msg X HELP FLAGS for the full flag list and access rules. Channel settings require master or owner access; recovery and moderation commands also check your channel permissions.

Channel settings and recovery

/msg X HELP CHANFLAGS

Channel behavior, including automatic status and entry restrictions.

/msg X HELP CHANMODE

Persistent channel mode settings.

/msg X HELP WELCOME

A private welcome notice sent to people joining the channel.

/msg X HELP AUTOLIMIT

Set an automatic channel limit using a configurable threshold.

/msg X HELP RECOVER

Recover a registered channel when your account has the required access.

/msg X HELP UNBANME

Remove bans matching your identity if your access allows it.

Account settings

Change your password

/msg X NEWPASS <old-password> <new-password>

You must be signed in. Changing the password signs out your other connections. If you have forgotten it, use FORGOTPASS. Do not post passwords in a channel.

Set a cloak preference

/msg X CLOAK ON

This enables your account cloak, normally user/<account>, or an identity assigned to your account. The preference applies when you authenticate again. Use /msg X CLOAK OFF to turn it off.

Other account controls

/msg X HELP EMAIL explains verified email changes. /msg X HELP SET covers account preferences. /msg X HELP CERT explains your TLS client certificate list. /msg X HELP DROP explains account or channel deletion and its confirmation step.

F — games on IRC

Signed in to X? You’re ready for F. Join #fun for word games, Blackjack and more, using your existing account.

F — start playing

F is RustNet’s games service. Play word games, share a Blackjack table, or try casino-style games in #fun. All chips are virtual and have no cash value.

  1. Sign in to X

Use your usual X account, preferably with SASL when connecting. If you do not have an account yet, register with X first. F does not need a separate password.

  2. Join the games channel

    /join #fun

Type game commands in #fun, or another channel where F is present. Use this to receive the command list in private notices:

    .commands
  3. Try a free Anagram

    .ag

F posts a scrambled word. Solve it with .ag <answer>, replacing <answer> with your word, or just type the word in the channel. Anagram costs no chips to play.

Your F player profile is created automatically when you first play while signed in. It starts with zero chips. Your balance follows your X account when you change nicknames.

Private help, channel games

Use /msg F HELP ag for Anagram instructions or /msg F SHOWCOMMANDS for the full catalogue. Most game commands belong in the channel, not in a private message to F.

Choose a game

Blackjack against the dealer

First collect 2,000 free chips with .givemoney. Then start a hand with a 1,000-chip bet:

.bj 1000

Wait for F to show your cards. Use .hit to draw another card or .stand to finish your hand. .double adds an equal bet, draws one card and stands, when allowed. Read /msg F HELP bj for instructions.

Play with other people

.mbj 1000

Open a shared Blackjack table for 2–6 players. Others join with .mbj join or .mbj join 1000. Each player faces the dealer.

.dice 1000

Challenge another player to a dice game. They enter with .go; the highest roll wins.

.startguess 1000

Start a closest-number contest. Others enter with .toguess, then submit a number from 1 to 1,000 with .guess <number>.

For the shared Blackjack table, .mbj status checks the turn, .mbj hand shows your hand and .mbj table shows the table. Use /msg F HELP mbj for turn controls, splitting, payouts and timeouts.

More games and word records

F also has Slots, roulette, Craps, Coin Toss, Lucky Lotto, Pick Three, Bingo and five-card draw Poker. Use .commands to see their syntax and chip costs, then /msg F HELP <command> for the rules.

For Anagram, .ag record shows your records and .ag record global shows the best records. .define <word> looks up a word’s saved definition.

Chips, savings and scores

Claim 2,000 free chips once an hour:

.givemoney

If you ask too soon, F tells you how long to wait. Anagram is available without a chip balance.

.money

Check your balance in a private notice.

.bank INFO

Check your savings. Use .bank DEPOSIT 1000 to save chips or .bank WITHDRAW 1000 to return them to your wallet. Replace the amount as needed; ALL is also accepted.

.rank

Privately check your place in this month’s competition.

.top10

Post the monthly top ten in the channel. Rankings include wallet, bank and chips currently in play.

.topchan

Privately view the current channel’s standings.

.stats

Receive your current season’s game results privately.

The monthly competition

Bank savings earn 5% daily interest at 00:01, rounded down to whole chips. At 00:00 on the first of each month, F announces the previous month’s leaders in #fun and resets wallets, banks and current records and statistics to zero. Active wagers are closed by the reset.

These times use Europe/Berlin, including daylight-saving changes.

Bring F to your channel

Sign in to X, join your registered channel, and make sure your account has X owner (+n) or master (+m) access there. Your F access must not be suspended.

/msg F REQUEST #channel

Replace #channel with your channel’s name. Once F joins, players sign in to X and use the same dot commands there. F announces channel additions in #fun.

Help and fair play

Use /msg F WHOAMI to check your account status and /msg F HELP REQUEST for request instructions. If you need assistance, contact RustNet.

Play manually. Do not automate games with timers or broadcast game commands across channels. Follow any warning F sends; continued automated play can suspend your F access.
